Small Town Planting: The Impact of Green

Have you noticed that the environment is big issue for Americans? If you haven’t crawl out of your box. Environmental awareness is here to stay and will play a prominent role in the upcoming elections. We are rapidly approaching a time where it won’t matter if you are liberal or conservative. Both sides will talk about the environment. They’ll just argue over who has the better plan. European politics is already there. John McCain is the leading the way for Republicans by diverting from party norms and talking about the importance of the environment.

The single biggest issues discussed are oil consumption and carbon footprints. Let me point out the obvious: small towns are green. Less driving means less oil to burn and a lower carbon footprint. Suburban and city living universally equates to traffic and long drive times. I live 12 miles from my office in Norther Virginia and it takes between 35 minutes to an hour to get there. Thank God for the iPod and cell phone!

The green arts of gardening and composting are possible in small towns as well. Ever try planting a garden in concrete? You can also guarantee there is less pollution in small towns. Fresher air, organic food, composting, recycling, lower carbon footprints: I can’t believe Al Gore doesn’t live in a small town.

With green living becoming more and more important for Americans, small towns can sit back and smile because we’ve been green for years.
