Outreach Idea: Make Someone’s Prom

prom picture 200x300 Outreach Idea: Make Someones PromI was never a big fan of prom.  I did go my Junior with my best friend and we had a great time.  But the peer pressure, rental suits, and my own social awkwardness made me not a big fan. Regardless of my hangups, prom is a big deal.  It’s an event that marks the high school experience.  Some kids won’t/can’t go simply because of the cost involved.  That’s where the church can help.  Matt Hafer, lead pastor of Catalyst Church in Morgantown, WV, is helping the students of Morgantown out by giving away prom dresses and makeovers.

Some of you may not think this is a good idea.  The church supporting kids going to prom?  I mean isn’t that an event where kids do all sorts of stupid things?  Isn’t there a lot of pressure on girls to…(Ok I’m going to stay PG here).  Feel free to comment if this idea upsets you because I do want to hear your perspective. But here’s a thought.  Helping a teen who can’t afford to go to prom is a generous thing.  Helping a girl feel beautiful is a good thing.  I’m sure that many of these girls will ask the question of why a church is doing this.  The answer?  Because God thinks you are beautiful.  He created you.  We want you to feel beautiful because in God’s eyes you are whether you are wearing this dress or some baggy sweats.  You are beautiful because God made you in His image.  These girls will forever remember prom and now hopefully as a part of that memory they will remember that their beauty isn’t derived from makeup and dresses but from their Creator.  So what do you think?  I personally, love the idea.  Let me know in the comments.  If you want more details on the event or want to donate a dress head over to Matt’s blog.
